Chevrolet
Chevrolets have been around for over a century; since 1912, the company has manufactured over 200 million cars and trucks. They’re owned by the American manufacturer General Motors and are known colloquially as “Chevy” or “Chev.” In 2014, the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) gave 8 Chevrolet models (the Malibu, Sonic, and Impala, just to name a few) a five-star safety rating. Their sales speak for their popularity: in 2011, almost 5 million Chevrolet cars and trucks were sold by General Motors. Their “Tri-Five” 1955-57 model of the Bel Air is one of the most iconic “American” cars, featured heavily in movies or period pieces about the 1950’s. Today, one of their most popular models is the Volt, which is a hybrid vehicle. Check out one of your local Chevy dealers for the 2014 model of the Volt!
Subaru
The first Subaru emerged in Japan in 1954, under the manufacturer Fiji Heavy Industries, but has quickly gained popularity in the United States, especially the Forester and Outback models. (If you check a Subaru inventory listing, those models are almost certain to be included.) In 2011, the Fiji Heavy Industries company was the 26th biggest automaker worldwide. Environmentally friendly buyers will like that the Subaru is made of highly recyclable materials throughout the entire vehicle, which means that they have a 97.3% recycling ratio rate for their end-of-life vehicles. This year’s Subaru inventory is sure to include the 2015 Subaru Outback, which was named the #1 Best Wagon in the U.S. News Best Cars rating. Subaru is also the only manufacturer that the IHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) gave “Top Safety PIcks” to for all its models for five years running. It’s easy to find a used Subaru for sale–according to the Subaru website, 95% of of Subarus sold in the last 10 years are still on the road. They’re an incredibly durable car and are a great first pick for a college kid.
