Three Helpful Types of Hose Clamps

Heavy duty hose clamps stainless steel

Did you know that the first hose clamp was invented in 1921? Hose clamps are designed to seal hoses onto barbs and nipples, and this helps ensure a tight seal between the hoses and their fittings. Fortunately, some hose clamps also serve alternate purposes, and this is beneficial because there are a variety of different hose clamps available.

1. Spring. These devices consist of spring steel, and they contain tabs that must be pressed together in order to adjust the diameter of the ring. Spring hose clamps are commonly used in applications where typical clamps would not normally work, such as at narrow and inaccessible angles. As a result, spring hose clamps are typically found on automotive cooling system hoses and engine bays.

2. Screw. Also known as worm drive hose clamps, these devices consist of a stainless steel band that contains an adjustment screw. This screw acts as a worm drive when it is turned, and this allows you to easily adjust the diameter of the ring. Because these types of clamps can also be daisy-chained in order to make longer clamps, they are commonly used to temporarily fix damaged pipes.

3. Wire. Wire hose clamps are made of heavy steel, and they are formed into a U-ring shape that has been bent outward and cut. These types of clamps also contain screws and nuts that allow for simple adjustment. Since wire clamps are designed to put pressure on all sides of a hose, they prevent working fluid from escaping the hose.

Hose clamps are available in an array of different sizes and styles in order to meet all your clamping needs. Screw, wire, and spring hose clamps, for example, all serve their own unique purposes. As a result, no matter what your specific job entails, there is a hose clamp that is right for you.
