An intermediate shaft is found in between the input and output shafts. Inside this intermediate shaft, you can find multiple clutch plates. As your car shifts different gears the intermediate shaft will make use of different clutch plates.
This system is called an automatic transmission because the car automatically changes the gear that is used for you as you increase or decrease speed. In a manual transmission, you have to physically change what gear you are in as you drive. Overall, automatic transmission makes your life easier when you drive.
